What is it?
A 40 minute audio broadcast covering some of the events featured in 1000 editions of Geography in the News, the weekly bulletin produced by
Dr. Neal Lineback
and his daughter
Mandy Lineback Gritzner
, M.S.
What can listeners expect?
Dr Lineback discusses the inspiration behind GITN and describes how the concept came about. He discusses a number of key topics that have featured over the 22 years since it was first published, and points to themes and topics which he expects to feature in future editions. The presentation includes illustrative slides including the original maps created specifically for each edition.
Subject Areas:
The impact of events on the wider world — seeing the bigger picture.
The breakup of the Soviet Union
The Israel/Palestine conflict
Terrorism around the world
Climate change and rising sea levels
Hurricanes
Future issues and topics
What will students learn?
Students are introduced to the concept of cause and effect — how events can be viewed not only in isolation but as part of a wider sequence of events with impacts locally, nationally and globally.
Suggested follow-up activities:
Ask students to review a current news story that has an impact outside of the region where it has happened. Encourage them to identify people or places that are affected by the event, how and why.
