On September 5, 1882 — About 10,000 laborers organized the very first Labor Day parade. The idea had been to honor the hard working American laborers. It was actually first celebrated on a Tuesday it was later designated to be observed on the first Monday of September. Congress passed a bill to establish it as a federal holiday in 1894 which was signed by President Grover Cleveland.
The International Date Line is located on the 180th Meridian — travelers going west will discover that the date in the eastern hemisphere will always be ahead one day ahead of the western hemisphere. It was first noticed by Magellan’s crew and Juan Sebastian Elcano who led the expedition after Magellan was killed in the Philippines. September 8th 1952 — The Old Man and the Sea was published which was the work of the famous American Novelist Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) who was born in Oak Park, Illinois.
September 16th 1810 — Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla a catholic priest called for the rebellion of his parishioners against the colonist power of Spain. Although he was the son of a wealthy landowner he sympathized with the native and mixed blood peasants. He is credited with igniting the flame that led to the Mexican War of Independence that lasted from 1810 to 1821 when the Spanish agreed to recognize Mexican independence.
September 26th 1896 — John Phillip Sousa (1854-1932) and his band gave their first public performance. He went on to conduct the Marine Marching Band which was one of the first military bands to record their performance under the Colombia Phonograph company.
This country is located in South America it is the smallest independent country on the continent and became a Dutch Colony in the 17th Century. Dutch is the official language although it’s not uncommon to hear English in the streets as it is widely spoken. It did not receive independence from the Netherlands until 1975.
