Maps101 in Your Classroom
Liz Todd, from Mohawk Trails Elementary, in Carmel, Indiana, uses Maps101 to teach her first grade class about maps and geography. "I introduce the concept of maps by describing them as pictures from above," she said. "We use the School Locator tool to look at the area around our school with satellite images. I begin with a long-distance view and zoom in, one level at a time. Then I zoom back out, one level at a time, so the students can see how maps show an area from a distance. Then we use a non-satellite image, and compare the two views. We end by creating a map of our classroom from above. The kids love it and get excited seeing the images of our school on the computer."
