On June 14th, 1777 — The continental Congress passed
a resolution to create a flag to represent all of the
thirteen colonies. Betsy Ross the widow of a upholstery
shop owner was asked to assist in the process. The flag
was to have alternating stripes red and blue in color, and
thirteen stars each signifying a colony. Congress
approved it but the very first Flag Day was not adopted
until 1877, which was also the 100th anniversary of the
adoption of the flag by the congress. It wasn't until 1916
that President Woodrow Wilson established June 14th as
the national annual celebration. Congress did not
officially recognize Flag Day until 1949 when it passed
the National Flag Day Bill.
