  • Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo — Or May 5th is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in Mexico. Contrary to popular belief it is not Mexican Independence Day that occurred on Sept. 16th 1810. The Battle of Puebla took place in 1862 when the invading French army of about 6,500 French troops fought 4,500 militia in the northern state of Puebla. The Mexican army was made up mostly of Mestizos and Zapotec Indians who defeated the French. Their victory has become more of a Mexican-American holiday as it is not as widely celebrated in Mexico as it is in the U.S.
