Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson — is considered to be the father of black history. He authored various scholarly books on the positive influence of blacks in American History. In 1926 he established the Negro History Week, which was later expanded to cover the entire month of February. In an effort to appeal to both the black and white community for the celebration, the month of February was chosen to recognize Frederick Douglass, and Abraham Lincoln both born in the month of February.
The date February 29th — only comes around every 4 years, Otherwise the month of February ends on the 28th in a regular year. The reason for a leap year is to help keep in sync with the seasons. In roman times the calendar year was on 355 days but in 46 B.C. the first leap year was added to the calendar by Julius Caesar.

February 12th, 1909 — The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded.
February 22nd 1868 — Spain ceded the territory of Florida to the United States in the Adams-Onis Treaty.
February 23rd 1832 — W.E.B. DuBois is born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Co-founder of the NAACP, he was also the first African American to receive a Ph. D. from Harvard University.
February 29th 1960 — A major earthquake rocks the city of Agadir, Morocco. The tremor lasted for about 15 seconds, when it stopped the entire city was almost totally destroyed.
North Magnetic Pole — The point on the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth toward which a compass' needle always points; at the North Magnetic Pole, a compass' needle will stand vertically. It is now located in northern Canada (and its location changes over time).
